and Recollections
An introduction to vital education proved to be more complicated than what we had thought earlier. While the physical and the mental aspects of education can be focused into tangible domains, the vital encompassed several things, from the awakening of the senses, the offering of emotions, the appreciation of beauty... To cover all these aspects, at least as an overview, was the purpose of the vital education session. The first aspect of vital education that we dealt with was the education of the senses. Swati and myself had selected various activities for the children. These activities were designed to make them aware of their five senses and also to make them understand the power and limits of these senses. Activities that I covered included optical illusions (sight and perception), potpourri making (smell), sweet sampling (taste). A notable activity was a little competition after the class. We blindfolded two of the children and asked them to identify the flavor of the sweet fed to them (from a choice of strawberry, blackcurrant, guava and orange). Both children identified the first three correctly. The forth one they identified by eliminating what had already been identified and fell for the trap when I gave them a flavor they had earlier identified correctly. Several small homework assignments and projects were given. The kids were given seeds to grow their own plants from. They were asked to read stories from Mother’s tales of all times. Selected videos from Disney’s Fantasia were shown for the children to understand and appreciate beautiful music and art. Over the holidays, they embarked on a project to appreciate the beauty of nature, including the beauty of flowers and seashells... The adventure thus continues, for the children as well as for us facilitators... -Kiruthika Om Namo Bhagavathe Sri Aravindaya Sharanam Mama

Reflections Today I went to the integral education program for vital education. I learnt about senses. There are five senses. They are hearing, sight, smell, touch and taste. There was a game in which we need to taste the sweet and tell what is it. It was a fun game. We also played a game outside where it was very hot. The game required concentration and brainpower. There was also a humming game in which the teacher will give us a rhyme and we need to hum it. It was very tricky. I had a great time at the Integral Education program. - Navin Kumar |
